Andy Holmes Memorial Row at HRR 2011

Sunday, 10th July 2011

To honour Andy Holmes, who sadly died in 2010, his coach Richard Ayling and contributions of Kingston Rowing Club, the KRC / GB Prince Philip 4+ (1981 – Suenson-Taylor, Hope, Holmes, Reynolds, Warner – coach Ayling) did a row-over the course during the lunch interval at Henley Royal Regatta, on Friday 1st July.

Andy’s place in the crew was taken by his pair’s partner Sir Steve Redgrave who joined the crew to support the legacy created by Andy and in recognition of the outstanding contribution made to GB (and KRC) rowing by Richard Ayling over the period 1978-1985.

Andy’s family followed the row-over in the umpire's launch. After the row a presentation was made to Richard Ayling for his services to Kingston Rowing Club and GB crews. It was a very emotional time for the crews, coaches, many KRC oarsmen and fellow internationals and of course Andy’s family.

The photos were taken by Don Somner who was one of the international KRC coaches during the period 1978-1988. He is an ex-captain of Kingston RC and has given much to the growth and development of the club and International rowing.
