Eventful times at Oxford Royal Regatta

Wednesday, 20th August 2014

FSC made the journey up the M40 last weekend to the dreaming spires of Oxford for the Oxford Royal Regatta and Oxford City Sprints. In fact, getting there was the most challenging part of the weekend; never let it be said that Furnivall Sculling Club like to do things the easy way.

Our crews were competitive amongst their respective fields although, alas, the spoils did not return to 19 Lower Mall this time. In particular, Captain Mike demonstrated superb racing as he calmly knocked out his opposition over three rounds in order to get to the final. The unfortunate fact of having to grab 3 hours sleep in the passenger seat of the club car the night before the racing probably didn't help his preparation and unfortunately he was just pipped to the post in the final.

We had two men's sweep boats entered too (see below). Our IM3 4+ came very close winning the event but met an Oxford college crew in the final. Well, perhaps by name but we think there may have been a few Blues in the boat! Our guys still did us proud of course. Many sympathies to our novice 4+ who were all fired up for a battle with HSBC but got collared by one of our crustacean friends off the start, which swung them round into the bank. While the "town" bank at the head of the river Isis appears to be made of sandbags, it is in fact concrete disguised as sandbags. Poor Waggy (the boat) came off a little worse for wear. All credit to the guys as they did in fact make it down the course, albeit with an "inlet" in the bow.

Our two women's double sculls (Meri & Fiona, Sarah & Rachael) definitely show promise but had some hiccups on the day (notably a wandering shoe). However, their cruising speed relative to the opposition indicates a positive sculling head race season is ahead.

On Sunday, Lucy and Emily raced at the Oxford City Sprints. This is a new combination that got together over the summer - impressively, Lucy only took up sweep rowing last autumn and was completely new to sculling at the start of this summer. The girls were racing at IM3 level despite being novice status (and it being Lucy's first ever sculling race), making it through both the heat and the semi-final. They were beaten by City of Bristol in the final, but this is an extremely promising performance given their relative experience. Well done ladies.

Both the men's and women's squads are now on a break until the start of next season in September (date to be confirmed - keep checking our website for details).
