Goodbye John Robbins 1925 - 2013

Monday, 9th December 2013

Furnivall Sculling Club is sad to announce the passing of our oldest and much loved member, John Robbins. John died on Sunday 1 December 2013. He lived for 88 fabulous years and died peacefully in his sleep, in a nursing home by the river where he was well looked after for his final days.

A lasting contribution

John celebrated his 60 years' membership anniversary at Furnivall in July 2013. He was club captain from 1964-1970 and later president of the club. John championed the re-introduction of women's rowing to Furnivall, 40 years after the club was bombed during the second world war. He brought the spirit of Dr. Furnivall back to the club which was dominated by men from the 1940s through to the late 1970s.

John’s contribution to Furnivall is not possible to capture in words alone. There is a gallery of photos reflecting on John's life at the club. We would welcome any additional photos for the collection. If you have some, please email the webteam.

'Furnivall was his life'

Retirement from captaincy and presidency did not keep John far away. He loved being with members and was always keen to hear of the club's progress. John was a familiar figure in our club room most weekends and attended all our club events. He also never missed a boat race day at Furnivall and his spot on the balcony was always reserved for him. John loved the buzz of a head race day and seeing the club busy.

Furnivall was his life and being at the club made him happy. We will miss hearing his "nice-to-see-you-dear" greeting and his cheery face in the club room. His picture above the bar will smile out to us forever. His legacy will live on for generations to come.

Rest in peace dear John, we will never forget you. You will forever remain in our hearts.
