Pairs Head of the River - Sunday 13 October

Sunday, 13th October 2013

Pairs' Head of the River , the first of the season's head races, took place on a very rainy Sunday. We had four crews racing: Jacqueline & Mike, Jonathan & David, Sarah & Fiona and Roma & Meri. We're very proud of them all, especially Meri & Roma who were racing in the pair for the very first time... in a 6k head race at IM2 level!

The only way is forwards

Meri and Roma, incredibly, in their first ever race in the pair: IM2 at the Pairs Head!

Meri has shared her reflections of the experience for us: "Roma and I pushed off from the Furnivall pontoon, with a sponge as our only companion, on the journey to find our marshalling position. We had our three month plan of learning how to back-down somewhere in the depths of our unisuits. In the end, this was left as a plan, since we were too busy going forwards, and it did not give us much extra warmth on that rainy day. Who needs to know how to back down anyway in a 500-boat marshalling queue...?

Getting friendly with BBLRC

We managed to get to the start line an hour and a half after boating, soaking wet but still upright. In the meantime, we had spent countless quality moments with that sponge; you can spot our yellow friend in the pictures! We both though that the drama was at an end as we heard the “go”. However, by the time we reached the first green buoy, 100 metres in, we had made very close friends with the Barnes Bridge ladies pair. They were literally sitting on top of us, while we sat a-top the green buoy. We all stopped for a little friendly chat (although there was no tea or cheese served, much to Roma’s disappointment).

'We made it'

After the break we did a new rolling start and, apart from having to give away our beautiful racing line, we had a nice and mostly enjoyable first-ever race in a pair. It was a shame that that our little breather won us the “last in the division” but we made it over the finish line and we didn’t even sink".

Thank you

Scot was an absolute legend for co-ordinating the racing crews; Nathaniel and David M did a stirling job helping crews off and on the pontoon; Georgie made tea and cheese toasties galore. Finally a big thank you to all those who came down to cheer on the racing crews. It really is appreciated!
