Race report: Quintin Head

Saturday, 1st February 2014

Under the bridge they go - the women's IM3 VIII: Ben, Roma, Jess, Lucy, Fiona, Emma, Erika, Cathryn, Sarah

The girls go under Barnes Bridge. Line-up: Roma, Jess H, Lucy, Fiona, Emma H, Erika, Cathryn, Sarah L. Cox: Ben

Both the men's and the women's IM3 VIIIs gained solid mid-table places last weekend at the Quintin Head. For the girls, captain Fox was making only her third appearance on stroke side at #2 and Sarah made a return from injury in the bow seat.

The conditions were as near-perfect as you could expect for a January head race, with some unexpected sunshine peeping through the clouds above the marshalling areas.

The girls' race was relatively uneventful for a Tideway head, with no capsizing crews and no crashes. Footage from the bows can be seen below; thanks to Sarah for donning a head-cam. Star-billing goes to Cathryn's ponytail at 2, shining in the sun, as well as the blade work of Jess H (#7) and Fiona (#5). An alternative way of mounting the camera might give a more all-round perspective - suggestions welcome!

Rowing Photography were on-hand to take plenty of photos:

The ladies held their position, gaining on the boat ahead in the final minutes. All-in-all it was a good warm-up for the bigger head races in March, presenting great "race conditions" in relatively calm water... for the Tideway. Thanks also to our lovely supporters for coming down to cheer us on. The sound of the vuvuzela certainly carries across the river from the FSC balcony!

Thank you very much to Emma H and Jess H for the race report
