Race report: The Women's Head of the River Race 2013

Monday, 11th March 2013

Congratulations to our WEHORR competitors. The race took place on Saturday 9 March. This year only two Furnivall Novice crews were able to take part and both crews achieved their objectives and gave us a performance that they themselves will never forget (you always remember the first time) and the WEHORR is possibly one of the toughest races you will ever do!

Novice B

Novice A only 67 seconds behind the winners

Despite a 40 seconds boat stopping blade-clashing-crabtastic drama just past Hammersmith Bridge our Nov A finished 157 after a starting place of 241, coming 8th out of 40 in the largest ever Novice category since London 2012.

They beat, wait for it, 61 IM3 and IM2 crews AND an Elite crew?! The winner of the Novice Club event was Lea RC who finished 54th in 20:02.39 – only 67 seconds ahead of the Nov A! Amazing!

They practically stopped for a cuppa and STILL hit the top 10 in their category with brilliant results! Quite incredible. We are very proud of them and can’t wait to see how they do in the regatta season!

Novice B beat 13 crews including an Elite, an IM3... and a Masters!

The Nov B who only joined our Learn to Row programme in October started at 302 and finished 290 beating 13 crews - including an Elite, an IM3 and a Masters crew! The Nov B were overheard saying "we’re a bit disappointed we didn't over take anyone" not realising that in head races you can’t always see the crews you are faster than.

Beating 13 crews when you only started rowing in October is pretty damn impressive! Prior to the Dewar Shield they had not rowed ‘all VIII' for more than 2 minutes. The Nov Bs should also be very proud of their achievement.

We were all very amused to see the crew return to a champagne reception by the river to celebrate their first race. We also look forward to reading more about their race in Rowing & Regatta where they will be featured in a next edition.

Thank you

These results do not just happen. Big thank you to our amazing coaches Steve and Dave and our Coxes Ben and Julian.

Thank you also to the incredible Furnivall boating machine. There are too many of you to mention individually. Thanks also to all of you who helped behind the bar or brought cake to sell or made cheese toasties to serve to our visitors.

Bring on the men's Head of the River on the 23rd March!
