Race report: Wallingford Head of the River

Sunday, 8th December 2013

Furnivall women's novice VIII+ gained fourth place at a chilly but sunny Wallingford Head earlier today.

Race day (which began with a 6.30am departure from Hammersmith) was the first time all eight had rowed together, with gutsy beginners Lucy and Mila rowing on stroke side after just two months in a boat.

After a long wait on the start line while a capsized crew were recovered, cox Ben expertly negotiated the twisting course, at one point with the aid of stroke Victoria's Lucozade bottle as an extra rudder. A Green Templeton crew kindly responded to his request to move over for us to overtake about a third of the way down the course. Out of seven crews in the women's novice category, Furnivall came fourth, in a time of 19:51.7.

The crew, minus Ben, is pictured below, proudly displaying ribbons in rememberance of dear club member John Robbins who sadly passed away the previous week.
