Competitive sculling squad
Competitive sculling captain: Alfredo Ramos
The Furnivall competitive sculling squad is formed by two groups:
A core group of experienced scullers forming an unofficial inter-club squad of 11 members (3 FSC, 4 AKRC, 2 Quintin, 1 Putney Town, 1 TRC) who row on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings at 6 am.
The key principles of this squad were summarised by Harry Powell (AKRC) as follows:
- Flexibility and taking responsibility for training
- If you miss a session, do something else some other time
- If you don't, you will be found out on the water
- Making every stroke count
- Side-by-side competitive pieces in every outing – nowhere to hide
- Finishing every session tired
- No spirit-destroying pointless slogging on the water/gym/ergo
- Each oarsman is strongly motivated to improve and, given appropriate feedback, will behave in way to maximise the probability of doing so
- You do not have to turn up to every session, but you always turn up if you say you will on time
- You finish every training piece
A further pool of up to 8 FSC scullers who regularly go out in the early mornings during the week. Outings for this second group are coordinated on an ad-hoc basis at the beginning of each week, and there is no strict training plan as for the inter-club squad.
Responsibility for land training is taken by each member, but we loosely follow The Pete Plan.
The Furnivall competitive scullers have competed at regional and national regatta's with wins at Vet's Fours Head 2010 (Vet B Quad), British Masters Championships (gold in Women's Masters A 1x and silver in Women's Masters B 1x) and Putney Town regatta (Men's IM3 1x).
If you are interested in joining this group, not afraid of early morning training and think you have what it takes to keep up with them, please contact the competitive sculling captain (email below).
