The Development Squad is specifically for those who have perhaps just completed a learn to row course, or someone with less than a year's experience rowing. The purpose of the squad is to build on the foundations learnt at the very beginning by developing technique and confidence on the water and in the gym. We aim for members to progress quickly so that you can compete in races when you're ready, or move to rowing socially if you prefer.

There are three training sessions per week specifically for the squad. A coached indoor erg session on Tuesday evenings and coached water sessions on Saturday and Sunday morning. Our Head Coach also organises Wednesday evening circuit sessions for the senior squads which we are very welcome to join.

The squad is a very friendly and sociable bunch with always something happening - whether that's going for a squad lunch post outing or some drinks by the river.

If you want to find out more, please email us using the contact details above or have a look at the FAQs below for more details.

What are the training times?
The erg session is on Tuesday at either 6:30 or 7:15pm and the water sessions are on  Saturday at 10am and Sunday at 9am.

Do you do sweep rowing and sculling?
Yes we offer both at Furnivall and you'll be doing within the dev squad. If you haven’t done one of them before, then don’t worry - we can help. If you have any concerns, just let us know.

What is life like at Furnivall, especially within the dev squad?
Rowing isn’t about being your best and only for yourself, it’s about working hard together and being the best team you can be. Our squad is like a family and we are also all friends both on and off the water. We organise regular socials, whether that’s having drinks post session or having a bite to eat in the pub. We are also really big on being as open as we can with each other and if anyone has any concerns or worries, they can feel comfortable to talk about them.

How much is the membership?
There are different types of membership which you can purchase.

Can I progress/ compete at Furnivall?
Absolutely! Even in the dev squad you will have the opportunity to take part in local
regattas after six months of experience. Then after at least a year, you will be able to take part in other, larger regattas. If, however, you don’t want to compete and prefer to row more
socially, then that’s absolutely fine too!

What if I am not as a fast learner as some of my squad mates?
Do not worry. Everyone goes at their own pace and will pick up technique at a different rate. The important thing is to focus and take on feedback by the coach which will help you to improve.
