Furnival Sculling Club

Furnivall Sculling ClubRowing club based in Hammersmith, London. Established 1896

The Senior squad

Squad captain: John Jackson-Houlston
Squad & club coach: Selin Bridges

Email address: seniorsquad-AT-furnivall.org

The senior squad is designed for members who are keen to race competitively and are able to commit to a structured training plan. We operate as a mixed squad, with the men and women training in both sweep and sculling boats under the supervision of the club’s head coach. The squad targets the major winter head races as well as a range of multi-lane and river regattas in the summer.

Training schedule

The Furnivall mantra of being the most social club on the Tideway (which every club incorrectly claims is them) feeds through the entire squad structure. Yes, the senior squad’s training program is rigorous, with expectations of commitment to both land and water training each week. During the winter, in addition to land training, we’re out on the water both weekend mornings, with an additional mid-week evening outing during the summer months. However, because we’re all crazy social, it makes the training, and ultimately the end result that much more enjoyable.

Ensuring a long-term membership commitment starts with ensuring the club is the right fit for people, so we would always encourage you to visit the club, meet the squad and see what you think before committing. If you are an experienced rower (sweep or sculling) or cox, and are interested in joining us, or coming down to have a look round, please contact seniorsquad-AT-furnivall.org.

Spring camp

We have an annual training camp in Spring where we take a break from the tempestuous mistress that is the Tideway, to train together without outside distractions. Since 2013, we've gone to the picturesque and placid waters of Pangbourne near Reading, and you can see what we get up to in the video below:
