Welcome to Furnivall Sculling Club

Our club was founded in 1896 by Dr Frederick Furnivall, who wanted to promote the cause of women in rowing, having seen the poor health of the girls who worked in his favourite tea shop. The club opened for men from 1901, yet its very successful Women's squad that pays tribute to the ideals of the founder. There is more about the history of FSC on our wikipedia article.

We are a mid-sized club averaging around 100 members, sometimes more, sometimes less!

The active membership is streamed into groups of people with similar aims, ambitions and desires. Our objective is to accommodate every kind of rower, from Novice/Beginner to Elite to Veteran. To find out what time we row and how we can help you, please click on the Contacts page and email the appropriate contact, who will be able to provide you with further information. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

In recent years we have had success at all levels of competition and we are extremely proud that some of our National Champions and Henley winners learnt to row at Furnivall. We are also fortunate to be able to offer recreational rowing and sculling opportunities for rowers who are no longer able to train to for competitions and want to paddle for fun. We have a strong volunteer coaching team that will support rowing and sculling, with 1st Eight coaching led by Andy Holmes MBE.

At the end of 2007, the club embarked on a major refurbishment programme including new changing room, new erg room, new kitchen and toilets. The refurbishment's first phase has now been completed & formally opened, giving the club a new women's changing room, erg room, kitchen, toilets and office space. Phase Two, launched in October 2008, will give us a new men's changing area and club room.
